He completed his B. A. and M. A. in philosophy in Chicago and finished his Ph. D. at Yale. At Wellesley College he was Instructor and Assistant Professor (1958-61). He has been professor of Humanities at the University of Virginia and professor at Princeton. He currently teaches in the comparative literature department at Stanford.
