Beschreibung
Relates the story of some 1,200 Central European Jews, most of them from Vienna, members of a transport organized by the Mossad, which in November 1939 sailed in three small ships down the Danube in the hope of reaching a Black Sea port where they would find a ship to Palestine. The transport reached Yugoslavia, but the Romanians refused to allow through passage. The group was further held up by mutual distrust among the various Jewish agencies, and by financial problems in securing a sea-going vessel. In the first winter the transport was stuck in the ice in Kladovo, and in the second winter in Šabac, where the invading German army overtook it in April 1941. The men were immediately shot and the women were interned, together with local Jews, in the Sajmište camp near Belgrade; in spring 1942 all inmates of the camp were killed in gas vans. Describes life on the transport and in the concentration camp. Includes many accounts about individuals. (Beschreibung aus externen Buchdaten)
